Ekurhuleni Motorists Given One Month to Recover Impounded Vehicles

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department has issued a final warning to vehicle owners with cars sitting in the municipal pound — act now or risk losing them for good.

Motorists have just a month to collect their impounded vehicles, or the EMPD will auction them off to the public, as permitted by national traffic law.

The department announced that from 15 May to 16 June 2025, it will facilitate the release of vehicles held at the pound. Owners can collect their vehicles on weekdays between 8am and 4pm.

Failure to reclaim the vehicles by the deadline will result in them being sold at public auction. The EMPD confirmed this action aligns with Regulation 320(4) of the National Traffic Act (NRTA) 93 of 1996, which outlines the procedures for disposing of and managing proceeds from unclaimed vehicles.

In a public statement, EMPD said many of these vehicles were impounded during routine law enforcement operations, and some may have been uncollected due to financial or legal constraints.

“We understand that many people rely on their vehicles for daily commuting and work purposes,” said an EMPD spokesperson. “We urge all owners to come forward and reclaim their vehicles to avoid the unfortunate situation of losing them at auction.”

The department encourages vehicle owners to bring all relevant documentation when visiting the pound to ensure a smooth collection process.
