tarynA German national, listed on Interpol’s most wanted list, was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng on November 15. The breakthrough came as a result of a routine border operation conducted by officials from the Border Management Authority (BMA).
The suspect, a German national, was intercepted while traveling with a fraudulent Israeli passport. The interception occurred after BMA officials realized the individual had a German accent, despite claiming to be an Israeli national. Upon investigation, DIRCO confirmed the suspect was not Israeli, prompting further inquiries.
After the suspect’s true identity was revealed, BMA officials contacted Interpol, which discovered the individual had been evading capture for eight years. He had been wanted for drug trafficking charges and was living under a new identity in Malawi. The fugitive had also been traveling under both German and Israeli passports.
With the confirmation of an international arrest warrant, Interpol swiftly took custody of the German national. He is now awaiting extradition to Germany to face charges for his criminal activities.
BMA Commissioner Michael Masiapato commended the professionalism and vigilance of the BMA officials involved. He highlighted the importance of the BMA’s role in safeguarding South Africa’s ports of entry and its collaboration with international security agencies like Interpol.
“Our robust systems and partnerships with Interpol and other global entities have proven indispensable in protecting our nation’s security and integrity,” Masiapato said.
The successful capture of the German fugitive is a prime example of the vital role international partnerships and effective border control operations play in combating crime. The cooperation between South African authorities and global security agencies has proven essential in ensuring transnational criminals are held accountable.
