Johannesburg Officer Shot Dead, Patrol Vehicle Stolen in Vlakfontein

A Johannesburg Metro Police officer was killed in a violent robbery incident in Vlakfontein, south of Johannesburg, on Wednesday. The suspects remain on the run.
Officer Matome Mokoena and two colleagues were responding to a robbery report when they came under fire from suspects inside a vehicle. As the officers took cover, the assailants pursued Mokoena into a nearby home and fatally shot him.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that Mokoena’s service firearm was stolen during the attack, along with his marked patrol vehicle, which had been left idling at the scene.
“The suspects followed Officer Mokoena to a nearby residence where he was shot and killed,” said Fihla. “Afterwards, they fled with his firearm and the JMPD vehicle.”
The stolen patrol car was later recovered by fleet services after it was remotely disabled. No arrests have been made at this stage.
