Johannesburg Launches New Waste Infrastructure to Boost Clean-Up Efforts

Johannesburg’s waste management infrastructure is receiving a major upgrade as the city rolls out a series of multimillion-rand development projects. The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), working in partnership with waste utility Pikitup, is leading efforts to improve refuse removal and environmental services across key areas of the city.
The initiative forms part of the JDA’s broader Public Infrastructure Delivery Programme, which aims to fast-track essential infrastructure that aligns with Johannesburg’s sustainability and urban growth goals. The upgrades will help Pikitup—currently operating 12 depots, 44 garden refuse sites and four landfills—deliver more reliable and integrated waste solutions.
Waste project rollout underway
Several sites are already under development as part of the plan to boost the city’s capacity for waste handling, landfill security, and site efficiency:
Linbro Park Landfill:
A new waste sorting facility is under construction, including stormwater systems, proper access roads, and spaces for reclaimers. Brickwork and electrical installations are in progress.
Marie Louise Landfill:
A reinforced concrete wall is being built to improve site security. Site establishment has been completed.
Ennerdale Landfill:
Similar security upgrades are taking place, with a new boundary wall under construction. Site setup is finished.
Zondi Depot:
This depot is being reinforced with a new concrete wall to protect Pikitup’s staff and equipment.
Goudkoppies Landfill (Phase 2):
This rehabilitation project includes creating a temporary leachate pond, a pumping system, and restoring a polluted pond. Work is currently at 5% completion.
Midrand Depot (Rabie Ridge):
The site will soon begin construction on boundary walls, water and sewer lines, stormwater drainage, and a new guardhouse.
Cleaner city, greener future
JDA CEO Themba Mathibe emphasised the importance of these infrastructure investments in building a sustainable urban environment.
“The JDA remains committed to delivering infrastructure that supports service delivery and promotes environmental sustainability. These waste management projects are key to ensuring a cleaner, more efficient Johannesburg,” Mathibe said.
