Johannesburg to Host Global Agricultural Leaders at International Farmers’ Conference

Johannesburg is preparing to welcome the world’s largest agricultural gathering, the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) Conference, which will be hosted at the Sandton Convention Centre from May 14 to 16, 2025. This major global event is expected to attract policymakers, agricultural innovators, trade experts, and industry leaders from over 200 countries.
At the heart of this international spotlight is the Joburg Market, the largest fresh produce market on the African continent. Generating over R10 million annually, the market stands as a testament to the city’s robust agricultural economy and trade infrastructure. Now, it takes center stage in showcasing South Africa’s potential in the global food system.
A Milestone for Johannesburg’s Global Ambitions
This marks the third major international event Johannesburg will host in 2025, following the U20 and G20 conferences. According to Mayor Dada Morero, the selection is a signal of Johannesburg’s growing role on the world stage.
“This is not only a privilege but a clear demonstration of Johannesburg’s readiness to lead, to connect, and to drive a transformative economic agenda,” said Morero. “We’re creating an enabling environment – from street-level entrepreneurship to international trade.”
Mayor Morero emphasized that these events support Johannesburg’s Growth and Development Strategy, helping to build global partnerships and strengthen infrastructure, competitiveness, and innovation.

More Than a Conference: A Launch Pad for Innovation
Nomoya Mnisi, MMC for Economic Development and custodian of the Joburg Market, described the upcoming WUWM conference as “a platform for new ideas, partnerships, and sustainable growth models.” With Africa holding over 60% of the world’s arable land, Mnisi highlighted the urgency of tackling challenges like food security, equitable trade, and infrastructure gaps.
“This isn’t just a conference. It’s a rallying point for transforming food systems not just for profit, but for people and the planet,” said Mnisi.
Charting the Future of Food Systems
With agriculture being the backbone of many African economies, the WUWM 2025 conference is expected to ignite critical conversations and collaborations. Mnisi called on global partners to align efforts around climate-responsive infrastructure, data-driven practices, and technologies that bridge the gap between farmers and consumers.
Johannesburg’s role as host puts it at the forefront of a broader continental mission: building an Africa that is food-secure, economically empowered, and globally competitive.
