Convictions Bring No Closure: Family Still Searching for Missing 6-Year-Old Joshlin Smith

The Western Cape High Court has found Racquel “Kelly” Smith, her boyfriend Jacquen “Boeta” Appollis, and their friend Steveno “Steffie” van Rhyn guilty of kidnapping and human trafficking. But for the heartbroken family of six-year-old Joshlin Smith, the ruling brings no relief — the little girl is still missing.

Joshlin vanished on February 19, 2024, from her home in Middelpos, Saldanha Bay. She never arrived at school that day. Her mother claimed the child was sick, then later said her school uniform was dirty. Within weeks, the three accused were arrested — but Joshlin had already disappeared without a trace.

On Thursday, over 200 people gathered at the White City Multipurpose Centre to follow the court proceedings, while dozens more stood outside, united in heartbreak and hope.

“It doesn’t matter how long they stay in jail. My grandchild is still gone,” said Amanda Smith Daniels, Joshlin’s maternal grandmother. “Kelly must tell me where she is. That’s all. I don’t want to see her.”

Emotions ran high both inside and outside the courtroom. Joshlin’s paternal grandmother, Louretta Yon, voiced her frustration and grief.

“The judge did well to convict them. I hope they get two life sentences. But what matters most is that Joshlin is not with us. Kelly knows where her child is. She refused to testify. That speaks volumes.”

A Community Still Waiting for Answers

Joshlin’s disappearance has devastated the community for over a year. Despite arrests, court proceedings, and mounting public pressure, the question remains: Where is Joshlin Smith?

“I clapped in court after the judgment,” said local resident Tamara Robin. “But I just want Kelly to tell us the truth. Is Joshlin alive or not?”

Many echoed her plea, hoping that the convictions would finally compel someone to break their silence.

“We’ve followed this case for months. Still, no one knows where Joshlin is,” said Cheryl Mitchell. “The conviction is a victory — but it doesn’t bring her home.”

No Justice Without Joshlin

While supporters welcomed the ruling as a step toward justice, the pain is far from over. For families and communities who’ve searched, marched, and prayed, true justice will only come when Joshlin is found.

“This is a victory,” said Dawn Fortune, “but it will only be complete when Joshlin is brought home. We’re still praying.”

The sentencing phase is expected soon. Supporters continue to hold onto hope that someone will finally speak — and end the family’s anguish with the truth.
