Morero Faces Motion of No Confidence: What’s Next for Johannesburg?

Mayor Dada Morero is facing a motion of no confidence from the DA due to ongoing service delivery issues. The motion, set to be debated later this month, highlights Morero’s failure to address power outages, water shortages, and corruption within the city.
Political analyst Sanet Solomon believes the motion of no confidence indicates a deeper challenge for Morero, with internal ANC rivals, including ANC Joburg deputy secretary Loyiso Masuku, poised to challenge his leadership.
The DA argues that Morero’s administration has not effectively managed the city’s resources or addressed the growing dissatisfaction among residents. His handling of the water crisis and corruption in municipal entities has been a key focus of the opposition.

Despite these concerns, the ANC, led by Gauteng co-convenor Panyaza Lesufi, has publicly backed Morero. They believe the DA’s motion is politically motivated and lacks enough support to succeed.
However, the ongoing governance issues in Joburg, including infrastructure problems and rising discontent, have led many to question whether Morero will be able to maintain control ahead of the 2026 local elections.
