More Petrol Price Relief for South Africans Expected in June 2025

Good news continues to flow for motorists across South Africa. Following a welcome drop in fuel prices in May, early indicators suggest that petrol and diesel prices could fall again in June 2025.
According to data released by the Central Energy Fund (CEF) on 12 May, market conditions are currently leaning in favour of vehicle owners. Thanks to a combination of a stronger rand and a lower Brent crude oil price, fuel costs are set to drop — if current trends hold.
Projected Fuel Price Changes for June 2025
Based on the latest data, here’s what South Africans could expect to pay per litre next month:
Fuel Type | Projected Price Change |
---|---|
Petrol 93 | Decrease of 42 cents |
Petrol 95 | Decrease of 41 cents |
Diesel 0.05% | Decrease of 75 cents |
Diesel 0.005% | Decrease of 75 cents |
Illuminating Paraffin | Decrease of 76 cents |
While this is not yet confirmed, it paints a promising picture for both private motorists and businesses reliant on fuel.
Why Are Fuel Prices Dropping?
Fuel prices in South Africa are influenced by two main factors:
-
The international price of petroleum products, largely driven by global oil prices.
-
The rand/US dollar exchange rate, which determines the local cost of importing these products.
As of mid-May:
-
Brent crude oil is trading at $65.15 per barrel
-
The rand is trading at R18.29/$
Both figures are favourable when compared to earlier in the year, and they’re key drivers behind the expected June decrease.
Reminder: Final Prices Confirmed in Early June
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy will confirm the official adjustments in the first week of June. The new fuel prices will come into effect at midnight on Tuesday, 3 June 2025.
Current Inland and Coastal Fuel Prices – May 2025
Fuel Type | Inland Price (R/Litre) | Coastal Price (R/Litre) |
---|---|---|
Petrol 93 | R21.29 | R20.50 |
Petrol 95 | R21.40 | R20.61 |
Diesel 0.05% | R18.90 | R18.11 |
Diesel 0.005% | R18.94 | R18.18 |
Illuminating Paraffin | R13.05 | R12.05 |
With prices already lower than earlier this year, a further drop in June could offer much-needed relief amid rising living costs.
Motorists in Mzansi should keep an eye on official announcements as June approaches. If current trends persist, more savings at the pump may be just around the corner.
Until then, go easy on the accelerator — and your wallet.
