Home Affairs Extends Saturday Hours to Help Citizens and Residents Get Smart ID Cards

The Department of Home Affairs has announced extended Saturday operating hours for select offices across South Africa during May 2025, specifically to assist naturalised citizens and permanent residents from visa-exempt countries in switching to the smart ID card system.
This change is part of Phase 1 of a national rollout intended to enhance security and improve service delivery. The department confirmed that offices will be open on 17, 24, and 31 May from 08:00 to 13:00.
Where and how to apply
Applicants can submit their smart ID applications at Live Capture Offices, selected bank branches, or online via the eHome-Affairs platform, which also offers appointment scheduling.
As part of the process, all individuals will be verified against the National Population Register at the Meeter-Greeter station to confirm their current Green ID Book details.
The department stated, “Permanent resident permit holders will also be assessed to ensure their country of birth falls within the list of 106 eligible countries. Applicants who do not meet verification requirements may be included in Phase 2 of the rollout.”
Application fees and exemptions
The cost of applying for a smart ID card is R140. However, applicants aged 60 and above are exempt from paying the fee.
