South Africa to Appoint New US Ambassador Following Diplomatic Rift

Published

on

In a bid to restore diplomatic ties with the United States, South Africa is set to appoint a new ambassador following the expulsion of former envoy, Ebrahim Rasool, in March 2025. The decision was confirmed by South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Ronald Lamola, who emphasized that President Cyril Ramaphosa will announce the new ambassador once groundwork is laid by Special Envoy Mcebisi Jonas.

Rasool’s expulsion marked a significant blow to US-South Africa relations. The US government declared Rasool persona non grata due to his outspoken criticism of the Trump administration’s policies. His removal highlighted the growing tension between the two nations, which had already been strained by issues like South Africa’s land reform policies and its legal challenges against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

To repair these relations, President Ramaphosa appointed Mcebisi Jonas, a former Deputy Finance Minister, as Special Representative to the US. Jonas’ role is critical in rebuilding cooperation, as he works closely with US officials and stakeholders to focus on shared interests and mutual benefits. Minister Lamola assured that Jonas will play a key part in navigating the diplomatic complexities ahead.

With Jonas already in place, the South African government is focused on improving bilateral relations, prioritizing areas such as trade, security, and diplomacy. The appointment of a new ambassador is expected soon, marking the next step toward mending ties and fostering a cooperative relationship with the United States.
