Stay and Rebuild: Steenhuisen Criticises Afrikaners Who Left for US

Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen has spoken out against the decision by 49 Afrikaners who recently applied for refugee status in the United States, saying they should have stayed and contributed to the rebuilding of South Africa. He described their departure as a misjudgment, especially in light of the country’s progress under new leadership.
Speaking at the Nampo Harvest Day event in the Free State, Steenhuisen encouraged farmers and citizens alike to remain in South Africa and play an active role in its development. He painted a hopeful picture of the country’s future and emphasised the need for unity and resilience, particularly in the agricultural sector.
He dismissed the claims made by the group regarding genocide and fears of land expropriation without compensation, stating that such fears are unfounded and that crime affects all South Africans equally, regardless of race or background.
Steenhuisen warned against making international decisions based on misinformation and called for greater reliance on facts when assessing South Africa’s challenges.
He also expressed optimism about the upcoming meeting between President Cyril Ramaphosa and US President Donald Trump, saying it presents an opportunity to address and correct misconceptions about the country on the global stage.
