Tshwane Water Outages from 5–16 May: Bronkhorstspruit Plant Shutdown to Impact Several Areas

Published

on

Residents in parts of Tshwane are being urged to prepare for temporary water outages starting Monday, 5 May 2025, as the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant undergoes an essential upgrade.

In a public notice issued by the City of Tshwane, officials confirmed the planned shutdown of the Bronkhorstspruit plant will last until Thursday, 16 May 2025. The interruption will allow for the installation of new control panels for the high-lift pumps — a vital component in the city’s water distribution system.

“These panels are crucial for ensuring efficient and reliable operation of the high-lift pumps, which are essential for delivering water to end users,” said the City of Tshwane.

Which areas will be affected?

The shutdown will affect several communities in Region 7, including:

  • Bronkhorstspruit Town

  • Ekandustria

  • Ekangala

  • Rethabiseng

  • Riamarpark

  • Zithobeni

  • Thembisile Hani Local Municipality (cross-border supply)

To ease the burden on residents, roaming water tankers will be dispatched to supply temporary relief during the shutdown. The City emphasized that it will closely monitor the upgrade process and keep the public updated throughout the 11-day project.

Why the upgrade matters

The high-lift pumps are responsible for pushing treated water to elevated reservoirs and into the broader municipal network. By replacing outdated panels, Tshwane aims to improve pump performance and water reliability in the long term.

Water outages also hit Johannesburg

Meanwhile, in Johannesburg, residents in Fleurhof should brace for a one-day water outage on Tuesday, 6 May 2025, from 8am to 4pm.

Johannesburg Water confirmed the interruption is necessary to allow the installation of a new pipe within the existing system. The utility acknowledged the inconvenience and assured residents that service delivery will improve following the work.

“Further details regarding alternative water supply will be provided,” said Johannesburg Water in a statement.

What residents can do

Residents in affected areas are advised to:

  • Store water ahead of the scheduled shutdown

  • Keep taps closed to avoid water loss when supply resumes

  • Stay updated via the City of Tshwane and Johannesburg Water social media channels

With municipalities working to enhance infrastructure and water reliability, both Tshwane and Johannesburg residents are reminded that temporary disruptions are part of broader service improvement efforts.
