Jacob Zuma Threatens Expulsion of MK Party Members Over ANC Coalition Talks

Published

on

Jacob Zuma, president of the MK Party (MKP), has issued a stern warning to senior members of his party, accusing them of engaging in secretive coalition talks with the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal. Zuma has threatened to expel party members, including prominent figures like Mervyn Dirks, Sthembiso Sello Magubane, and others, for participating in these negotiations, which he deems a violation of MK Party policy.

In a strongly-worded letter, Zuma outlined his disapproval of any interactions with the ANC, an organization he described as “directionless, collapsing, and ethically bankrupt.” The MK Party, founded by Zuma in December 2023, aims to be a political force independent of the ANC, and he emphasized that no member should engage in coalition talks with the governing party. Zuma, who remains a key figure in South African politics, expressed that the MK Party’s goal is to strengthen itself, not revive the ANC.

According to News24, the controversial letter was sent to Dirks, who was appointed the MK Party’s chief whip in KwaZulu-Natal in 2024, and three other senior members: Bongumusa Mkhize, Sthembiso Magubane, and Serame Mogale. Zuma accused them of undermining the party’s unity, stating that their actions violated official party decisions and contributed to internal divisions. The MK Party president has given these members six days to respond to the allegations and defend their actions, threatening expulsion if they fail to do so.

Zuma’s accusations also included claims of factionalism within the party, alleging that some members were spreading lies and misleading information to gain favor with the ANC. He further criticized their behavior as divisive and contrary to the party’s principles of unity and discipline.

The move has sparked strong reactions, with some South Africans voicing their support for Zuma’s stance, while others criticize him for turning the MK Party into his own political fiefdom. Commentators on social media have pointed out the MK Party’s track record of internal conflicts, absenteeism in Parliament, and its failure to deliver on key promises.

On social media, critics of Zuma’s leadership have been vocal, with many questioning the MK Party’s direction under his rule. One user wrote, “MK has delivered nothing but fighting and absenteeism. So many wasted votes.” Another criticized Zuma for allegedly aiming to leverage the party’s position to gain more power and wealth. “Just like Malema and the EFF, MKP is Zuma’s fiefdom,” one critic said.

In a separate but related matter, the MK Party has called for a lifestyle audit of South African judges, demanding greater transparency from the judiciary. The party believes that judges, given their power, should be held accountable to the public through lifestyle audits that cover everything from lower court judges to those in the Constitutional Court.

Zuma’s leadership and the MK Party’s future remain uncertain, as the party navigates internal conflict and external political pressures. The outcome of the ongoing coalition talks in KwaZulu-Natal could determine whether Zuma’s grip on the MK Party remains firm or if the party fractures under the weight of its internal divisions.
