Shock and Outrage as Five Al Jazeera Journalists Killed in Gaza Strike

The world watched in horror on Sunday as news broke that five Al Jazeera journalists and a freelance reporter were killed in a targeted strike in Gaza, a devastating blow to press freedom and the vital role media play in conflict zones.
Tragedy Near Al-Shifa Hospital
The victims—Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, correspondents; Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa, camera operators; along with freelance journalist Mohammad al-Khaldi, lost their lives when their press tents were hit near the bustling Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. Al Jazeera has unequivocally condemned the strike, calling it a “deliberate assassination” by Israeli forces aimed at silencing brave voices reporting from the frontline.

A Blow to Press Freedom
This tragedy has reverberated beyond borders, with South Africa’s National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) joining a chorus of international voices condemning the attack. SANEF highlighted the ongoing pattern of violence against journalists in Gaza, emphasizing that this not only endangers lives but also robs the public of vital information during one of the world’s most intense conflicts.
The Southern African Freelancers’ Association echoed this sentiment, with chairperson Nathi Gule stressing that targeting media workers anywhere is unacceptable, and threatens democracy itself. “Journalists hold truth to power, even when it costs them dearly,” Gule said.
Voices from Around the World Demand Accountability
Sara Qudah, Regional Director for the Committee to Protect Journalists, didn’t mince words: “Israel is murdering the messengers. This was not a collateral casualty, but an outright execution of an entire news crew.”
Similarly, Reporters Without Borders expressed profound anger, condemning the attack as an “assassination” and demanding justice for the slain journalists.
Anthony Bellanger, Secretary-General of the International Federation of Journalists, called the strike a war crime, urging UN member states to back binding protections for journalists worldwide. “When you kill journalists, you kill truth,” he said.
Even Amnesty International’s spokesperson Mohamed Duar from Australia’s Occupied Palestinian Territory division spoke passionately about the loss: “Anas al-Sharif dedicated his life to documenting the realities on the ground, exposing atrocities that the world needs to see. Targeting journalists like him is an attack on humanity itself.”
Context: A Dangerous Landscape for Media in Gaza
This latest strike is part of a worrying trend. Journalists reporting from Gaza have long faced threats, with media facilities often caught in the crossfire or deliberately targeted. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains one of the most perilous places to report from, as efforts to control narratives clash with the fundamental right to free press.
Social media in South Africa and worldwide has erupted with grief and anger, with many users calling for stronger international measures to protect journalists. The hashtag #ProtectJournalists trended for hours, as news organizations, activists, and citizens voiced their solidarity.
The Unseen Cost of Silencing Media
When journalists are silenced, the world loses vital eyewitness accounts, and the truth risks being buried beneath propaganda and misinformation. In conflict zones like Gaza, this loss can have catastrophic consequences—not just for reporting, but for accountability, justice, and ultimately peace.
South African journalists and civil society groups are now joining calls for urgent action to safeguard press workers everywhere, urging governments and international bodies to ensure that such tragedies are not repeated.
