Mbalula calls for unwavering ANC loyalty

In a spirited speech in Polokwane on Wednesday, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula drew an unusual but memorable parallel: the loyalty of ANC members should mirror that of Kaizer Chiefs football fans.

“You must be like the Kaizer Chiefs’ fans. This club loses every week, but its fans continue to support it. They fill Peter Mokaba Stadium even in tough times,” Mbalula said, reminding members that patience and commitment are crucial as the ANC navigates its challenges.

He added that the party’s members, much like Orlando Pirates supporters, must remain optimistic even in the toughest moments. “Love the ANC, do not lose hope,” he said.

ANC as a relationship that must be nurtured

Mbalula painted the ANC as a partner that needs fixing, saying members are like caretakers in a relationship. “If it is a man struggling with alcoholism, you help him stop his bad habits. One day, people will compliment him, not knowing you put him on the right track. This ANC will be fixed by you.”

The message was clear: internal efforts, patience, and loyalty will determine the party’s future.

Facing decline and new competition

The remarks come at a critical time for the ANC. For the first time since 1994, the party lost its parliamentary majority, now sharing power with smaller parties including its rival, the DA.

The ANC’s support dropped from 57% in 2019 to 40% last year, with some attributing the decline to new political entrants such as the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, launched by former president Jacob Zuma in 2023. Analysts warn that support could dip below 30% in certain urban municipalities if trends continue.

Despite these setbacks, Mbalula expressed confidence in the party’s strongholds, particularly Limpopo, where the ANC controls most municipalities without coalitions.

Warnings against internal strife

Factionalism and leadership battles remain a thorn in the ANC’s side. Mbalula cautioned Limpopo members against infighting. “Avoid fighting each other like cats,” he said, stressing that internal unity is critical for the renewal project.

He also appealed to volunteers and grassroots members, many of whom juggle their dedication to the party alongside unemployment and financial struggles, acknowledging their commitment as central to the ANC’s resilience.

Looking ahead to renewal and hope

The speech comes ahead of the ANC’s 114th birthday celebrations in Rustenburg, North West, on Saturday. Mbalula framed the renewal process as both urgent and hopeful, reminding members that loyalty, patience, and grassroots effort are the keys to restoring confidence in the party.

For Mbalula, the ANC’s journey is like a football season: losses are inevitable, but dedicated fans and members, can help the team bounce back. “Do not be disheartened. This thing is full of hope,” he said.
