ANCYL Retracts ‘Tea Party’ Remark, Reaffirms Support for National Dialogue
The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has apologised for describing the National Convention as a “tea party” and has restated its full backing for the National Dialogue.
ANCYL Clarifies Its Position
In a statement, the organisation admitted the remark was an “unfortunate characterisation.”
Secretary-General Mntuwoxolo Ngudle explained that the frustration stemmed from the exclusion of youth organisations that represent active constituencies.
“These formations, with thousands of active members, are well-placed to articulate what needs to be done,” the statement read.
ANCYL Calls for Youth Inclusion
The Youth League emphasised that while it supports the National Dialogue, it believes the process must address critical issues affecting the majority of South Africans, including:
-
Gender-based violence
-
Crime and public safety
-
Migration
-
Education reform
-
Implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI)
The ANCYL also indicated it would engage with other youth bodies to establish a parallel youth-focused dialogue, ensuring young voices are properly represented.
ANC Responds
The ANC welcomed the clarification, saying the apology reinforced unity within party structures.
“We note the regrettable reference to the process as a ‘tea party’ and welcome the correction made by the Youth League,” the party said.
