Blood Moon South Africa: Will Clouds Spoil the View on 7 September?
South Africa is set for a rare total lunar eclipse, or Blood Moon, on Sunday, 7 September 2025. This eclipse is expected to be the longest since 2022, offering a fiery red display across the night sky.
However, weather conditions will determine whether you actually see it. Springtime in early September often brings unsettled skies, so some regions may get clear views while others face cloud cover.
Regional weather outlook
Johannesburg
-
Evening skies start cloudy around 19:00 (22 °C).
-
Peak eclipse at 20:11 may coincide with cloud cover.
-
Eclipse visibility depends on whether clouds clear later in the night.
Cape Town
-
Mostly clear skies through the evening, with intermittent clouds around 19:00–20:00.
-
Conditions improve after 21:00, making later stages more visible.
Durban
-
Clear skies expected throughout the evening and night.
-
Ideal viewing conditions with little to no cloud interference.
Eclipse timing
The total eclipse phase lasts just over an hour, peaking around 20:11. Even thin clouds may only partially obscure the red glow, but early and late partial phases could be harder to see.
For those clouded out, astronomy groups and observatories plan to stream the eclipse online, so nobody misses this rare celestial event.
