Historic Breede Valley property heads to auction amid housing demand

A historic Breede Valley property is set to go under the hammer, with the sale attracting strong interest from developers and investors.

According to Claremart Executive Director Zain Amod, the auction forms part of a broader effort to manage municipal assets responsibly.

“It’s a financially sound strategy and part of responsible governance. This is about stimulating the local economy through proper asset management,” Amod said.

Developers eye housing opportunities

With rising migration to towns outside Cape Town and a shortage of affordable housing, the property has become a hot prospect for developers.

Claremart’s Rob Stafanutto said the site could balance preservation with progress.

“Heritage and development can coexist. Kleinplasie has the potential to bridge history and progress,” he noted.

Museum remains protected

Officials confirmed that the Kleinplasie Museum, a provincial landmark, will remain operational despite the auction. Safeguards are in place to protect the museum while opening space for new investment.

The municipality stressed that the auction follows a transparent tender process and ruled out any informal transfers.

A new chapter for Kleinplasie

The sale signals a new era for one of the Breede Valley’s cultural landmarks, with the potential to merge heritage preservation and economic growth.
