Where is Brown Mogotsi? Police Probe Vosloorus Shooting Amid Concerns
The streets of Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg, are buzzing with questions: where is Brown Mogotsi, the controversial businessman and political fixer, after an alleged shooting incident left his car riddled with bullets?
Police confirmed that around 11 bullets struck the small Chevrolet in which Mogotsi was travelling late Monday evening, yet remarkably, he walked away unharmed.
Police Investigate, But Mogotsi Is Missing
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe told journalists that investigators have been unable to reach Mogotsi as of Tuesday morning. While he had promised to report the incident at Vosloorus police station, he did not show up.
Mathe emphasized that the investigation would continue regardless of Mogotsi’s presence:
“We cannot close the case. There are resources and personnel deployed at the scene, and we are determined to get to the bottom of what happened. Whether Mr Mogotsi presents himself or not, the investigation continues.”
Police are combing the crime scene for all physical evidence, noting that Mogotsi was unscathed despite the 11 rounds fired at his vehicle. No blood was found, and officers at the scene confirmed that he sustained no injuries.
Could It Have Been Staged?
Journalists pressed Mathe on the possibility that the shooting was staged. She was clear: if Mogotsi faked the attack, he would face serious consequences.
“That would be defeating the ends of justice. We’ve mobilized Visible Policing, detectives, and various experts. If it’s staged, charges will follow.”
For now, though, police are treating it as a genuine attempted murder case, working to ensure no detail is overlooked.
Political Context: Madlanga Commission Involvement
The incident has cast a shadow over Mogotsi’s scheduled engagement with the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating political interference, corruption, and criminality within South Africa’s criminal justice system. His presence as a key witness has sparked concern over his safety.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels confirmed that discussions are ongoing to provide protection for Mogotsi while he participates in the inquiry.
Social Media Reacts
As news of the shooting spread, South Africans expressed both shock and skepticism online. Some questioned whether Mogotsi had indeed been targeted or if the incident was exaggerated, given the absence of injuries. Others highlighted the broader concerns around witness safety and corruption investigations in the country, noting that high-profile figures often face threats when involved in sensitive political matters.
The Vosloorus incident serves as a stark reminder of the fraught intersection of business, politics, and personal safety in South Africa, especially for those entangled in controversial investigations.
As authorities continue their search for Mogotsi and gather evidence from the scene, many are left wondering: is this a genuine attempt on his life, or a calculated diversion? The answer may only emerge once Mogotsi comes forward or if police uncover the truth independently.
