What should have been a day of celebration for thousands of cyclists in Cape Town ended in tragedy after organisers confirmed that a participant died during the 2026 Cape Town Cycle Tour.

The 48th edition of the iconic race took place in the Mother City this past weekend, drawing more than 30,000 riders to the start line. Known as the world’s largest timed cycling event, the 109km route around the Cape Peninsula usually brings together professional athletes, weekend riders and charity participants for one of South Africa’s most loved sporting traditions.

But this year’s race was overshadowed by the loss of one of its participants.

Cyclist Dies During 109km Challenge

According to organisers, the cyclist suffered a suspected cardiac arrest while taking part in Sunday’s race.

In a brief statement released after the event, the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust expressed its sadness following the incident and extended condolences to the rider’s loved ones.

Out of respect for the family’s privacy, organisers have not released the cyclist’s identity or confirmed exactly where along the route the incident occurred.

Medical teams are stationed throughout the race route each year to respond quickly to emergencies, given the scale of the event and the demanding terrain riders face along the peninsula.

A Race Celebrated Around The World

The Cape Town Cycle Tour has long been one of South Africa’s flagship sporting events. First held in 1978, the race has grown into a global attraction that brings cyclists from across the country and around the world to Cape Town each March.

The scenic but challenging route includes climbs such as Chapman’s Peak Drive and sections exposed to strong coastal winds, especially through the Southern Peninsula. This year was no different, with gusting crosswinds making conditions particularly difficult for riders.

Despite the tragedy, the elite races still produced dramatic finishes.

Gibbons And Bone Claim Elite Victories

South African rider Ryan Gibbons powered to victory in the elite men’s race after a tense and chaotic contest that saw several crashes in the peloton.

Positioning proved crucial as riders battled the crosswinds sweeping through the peninsula.

Earlier in the day, Lisa Bone secured the women’s elite title after winning a sprint finish. She crossed the line ahead of Russia’s Daria Pravilova, with American rider Kate Courtney taking third place.

Past Incidents In The Race’s History

While the Cape Town Cycle Tour is widely celebrated for its festive atmosphere and world-class organisation, tragic incidents have occurred in previous years.

A 69-year-old cyclist died after collapsing during the 2023 race near Misty Cliffs. In 2020, a 44-year-old rider passed away shortly after finishing the event.

Another participant died in 2019 after collapsing near Smitswinkel Bay.

One of the most difficult years in the event’s history came in 2018, when three cyclists lost their lives during the race, including a 40-year-old who died in a pile-up and another rider who suffered a suspected heart attack.

As one of the largest endurance events in the world, organisers continue to emphasise rider safety, medical readiness and participant health screening.

Even so, the scale and physical demands of the event mean that incidents, though rare, remain a sobering reality.

For many in the cycling community, the focus now turns to remembering the rider who lost their life during what is usually a day that celebrates sport, resilience and the beauty of Cape Town’s coastline.
