Capitec to Offer Smart ID and Passport Services from October: Here’s How It Will Work

Capitec Joins the Smart ID Game
For years, Capitec stayed out of the Department of Home Affairs’ (DHA) Smart ID pilot, leaving competitors like FNB and Standard Bank to offer the service. But from October 2025, that changes. The bank has confirmed it will start issuing Smart IDs and passports at 10 select branches, with a national rollout to 100 branches by early 2026.
The move comes after Capitec signed a partnership agreement with the DHA, part of Minister Leon Schreiber’s push to digitise essential government services.
Why Capitec Changed Its Mind
When the original DHA pilot launched years ago, Capitec said no. The bank argued that the system wasn’t fully integrated and would force staff to split their time between bank customers and DHA appointments.
Fast forward to 2025, and the story is different. The DHA has modernised its systems, making it possible to process Smart ID applications in minutes without disrupting normal banking operations. This digital-first approach — which includes future app integration, convinced Capitec to join in.
“This partnership is the first proof point of our commitment to work closely with the government to resolve real problems,” said new Capitec CEO Graham Lee. “By combining our technology, branch network and client-first approach with the DHA’s mandate, we are making essential services faster.”
Where You’ll Find the Service
At first, Capitec is targeting areas underserved by DHA offices or other banks offering Smart IDs. Many of the current partner banks are concentrated in major metros, leaving smaller towns and peri-urban areas without access.
By placing Smart ID terminals in new locations, Capitec could save residents hours of travel, a win for people who usually have to take a day off work just to visit a Home Affairs office.
How It Will Work in Branch
From October, here’s what Capitec customers can expect:
-
Photo Capture: If the DHA doesn’t have a usable photo, clients can visit a Smart ID terminal in the branch for a new one.
-
Biometric Verification: Enter your ID number, take a photo, and the system instantly verifies your details with the DHA database.
-
Collection: Your Smart ID will be ready for pick-up at the same branch within weeks.
-
Future Add-ons: App-based applications, home delivery, and passport renewals are planned for later stages.
Social Media Buzz and Public Reaction
The announcement has sparked excitement online, with many South Africans saying Capitec’s involvement could mean faster, more accessible services. Others are cautiously optimistic, pointing out that previous banking partnerships with the DHA often had long waiting lists.
Some rural customers have taken to Facebook to ask if their towns will be included in the first rollout. Capitec has hinted that the official list of October branches will be released in the coming days.
A Step Towards a Digital Home Affairs
South Africa’s Home Affairs offices have long been notorious for queues, delays, and system outages. By integrating services into bank branches and, eventually, mobile apps, the DHA’s digital transformation could reshape how citizens access essential documents.
Capitec’s entry into the programme could be the push that brings Smart IDs and passports within easier reach for millions, not just in Sandton or Cape Town, but in towns and communities that have been left waiting the longest.
