Repairs to Johannesburg’s iconic hospital inch forward, but safety questions loom large

Johannesburg’s Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital is on track to complete repairs to fire-damaged sections by August 2026, yet serious concerns have been raised about the hospital’s fire safety preparedness or lack thereof.

The devastating blaze in April 2021 forced the hospital’s closure, redirecting patients to already overstretched facilities like Chris Hani Baragwanath and Bertha Gxowa hospitals. A police forensic report later confirmed the fire was an act of arson.

The Costly Road to Fire Compliance

Despite progress in repairs, Gauteng’s Democratic Alliance (DA) Shadow Health MEC Jack Bloom has sounded the alarm over a massive R1.7 billion funding shortfall needed to bring the hospital in line with fire safety laws and prevent future disasters.

Current repair efforts fall under what is called “Work Package 1,” with a budget of R426 million—of which only R139 million has been spent so far. However, this phase does not include the extensive fire safety upgrades, which are planned for “Work Package 2” and remain unfunded.

Bloom criticises the situation as “disturbing,” pointing out that it’s been over five years since the fire and yet the hospital remains vulnerable to fire risks. “This slow pace and funding gap would never be tolerated in private healthcare,” he said.

Parking Shortages Add to Patient Woes

Beyond fire safety, the hospital still faces a shortfall of 700 parking bays, creating headaches for patients and staff who must navigate longer distances amidst ongoing construction.

The Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko has indicated that parking will be reopened progressively once it’s safe, but the shortage remains a major operational challenge.

A Broader Challenge for Public Healthcare

Charlotte Maxeke is a flagship hospital for Gauteng, serving thousands daily and playing a critical role in the province’s healthcare system. The ongoing delays and funding gaps highlight deeper issues in public infrastructure management and financing.

Residents and health advocates have voiced frustration on social media, urging government accountability:

“How do we trust a hospital to keep us safe when it can’t even fund fire compliance?” tweeted a concerned Johannesburg resident.
“Public health infrastructure is crumbling, we need urgent, transparent action,” added another.

Nkomo-Ralehoko’s office says it is exploring various funding avenues, including private investments, to bridge the gap. But until those resources are secured and fire compliance work begins, the hospital remains at risk.

The question on many minds: can Johannesburg’s premier academic hospital finally put the trauma of 2021 behind it — and ensure safety for patients and staff alike?

What this means for patients: If you or a loved one are using Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, be aware of ongoing construction, parking challenges, and keep an eye on official updates about safety and access.
