Chatsworth caregiver denied bail in employer’s murder case
A 54-year-old Chatsworth caregiver, Kogie Adilutchmee Moodley, has been denied bail in connection with the murder of her employer, 65-year-old Stephen Narayanasami Chetty, while her 25-year-old son, Delon Moodley, was released on bail.
During the bail hearing at Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court, Magistrate L Ndlovu questioned why Moodley’s husband, who was present in the house at the time of the murder, was not also charged.
Chetty was initially believed to have died of natural causes, but an autopsy revealed he had been strangled. The court heard that the accused allegedly acted out of greed.
The magistrate noted that only Kogie, her husband, Chetty, and Chetty’s bedridden wife were in the house at the time of the murder. Delon reportedly left the house at 10:30am, discovering the death the following day.
“The court would have expected that the husband would also be sitting here as part of the accused,” Ndlovu said.
The State is relying on circumstantial evidence, and the investigation continues to determine all parties responsible for Chetty’s death.
Moodley had been employed as a caregiver for Chetty’s wife for two years following her stroke.
