Checkers Sixty60 Expands Delivery to 694 Stores Across South Africa

Checkers Sixty60 continues to grow, now offering deliveries from 694 stores nationwide, up from 539 locations in 2024. The service has crossed 100 million orders, cementing its role as a major player in South Africa’s online grocery market.

Sales and service performance

For the 52 weeks ending 29 June 2025, Sixty60’s sales increased 47.7% to R18.9 billion, compared to 58.1% growth last year.

Shoprite CEO Pieter Engelbrecht highlighted the service’s customer experience:

  • 94.0% on-time deliveries

  • 96.8% order fulfilment

“Success measures extend beyond sales growth,” Engelbrecht said.

Omnichannel expansion

Shoprite is expanding its omnichannel platform across South Africa. With 85% of households within 5 km of a corporate-owned store, customers can now order groceries and general merchandise online for delivery within one hour.

The company recently launched a new Checkers transactional website and re-platformed Sixty60 to include deliveries from Checkers Hyper stores, widening its product offering.

Pingo acquisition

The expansion followed Shoprite’s full acquisition of Pingo, its last-mile delivery partner, in October 2024. Previously a joint venture with RTT Logistics, Pingo manages Sixty60 delivery drivers.

“Full ownership allows us to invest strategically and integrate the service, accelerating technology development for a seamless customer experience,” Shoprite said.

While the Pingo acquisition contributed to a 7.4% increase in expenses, delivery costs are now classified under cost of sales, reflecting the company’s expanded operational responsibilities.

RTT Group background

RTT, previously co-owner of Pingo, has faced financial challenges affecting retirement fund contributions. RTT operates CourierIT and fully acquired it by December 2017. The company merged RTT and CourierIT in 2022, continuing operations as a division.

Despite these challenges, Shoprite’s direct ownership of Pingo strengthens Checkers Sixty60’s capacity and positions it for further growth in South Africa’s online retail market.
