Johannesburg’s CBD was rocked on Monday morning when a 35-year-old attorney, Chinette Gallichan, was fatally shot outside the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) offices at the corner of Fox and Joubert streets. The shooting occurred around 9:00am as she arrived for a scheduled hearing.
Witnesses said Gallichan had just stepped out of her vehicle when a gunman approached and opened fire at close range. The assailant fled on foot before getting into a waiting car, vanishing into the busy streets of Johannesburg.
Police confirmed a murder investigation is underway. Early indications suggest the attack may have been targeted, as nothing was stolen from Gallichan.
Gallichan, who hailed from Krugersdorp, had built a reputation as a dedicated labour attorney. She held an LLB from University of South Africa and a postgraduate diploma in labour law with distinction from University of Johannesburg.
Colleagues at Sibanye-Stillwater described her as diligent and compassionate, often representing workers in retrenchment and wage disputes. Fellow attorney Jacobus Myburgh noted her presence was well-known in both legal and athletic circles, especially at the CCMA.
News of her death quickly spread online, with friends and colleagues expressing shock and sorrow. Many highlighted her commitment to justice and her approachable, professional manner in the courtroom.
The police urge anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses to trace the suspect.
Monday’s incident underscores the vulnerability of public spaces, even in broad daylight, and raises questions about safety for professionals attending sensitive hearings in the CBD.
As South Africans mourn the loss of a talented lawyer, attention now turns to ensuring justice is served for Gallichan and her family.
