Comrades Marathon Appoints Sue Forge as New Race Director
The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has announced the appointment of Sue Forge as the new Race Director.
The role, introduced as part of CMA’s strategic restructuring, separates race operations from the position of General Manager to sharpen focus on safety, innovation, and the runner experience.
Transparent Appointment Process
The selection process was overseen by an independent recruitment committee that received more than 100 applications.
Candidates were evaluated on experience, leadership, and alignment with the evolving demands of managing the world’s oldest and largest ultramarathon. After a series of interviews and assessments, Forge emerged as the unanimous choice.
Experienced Event Specialist
Forge brings over 20 years of experience in athletics and large-scale sporting events. Her leadership record includes:
-
Race Director of the Absa Run Your City Series
-
Race Director of the SPAR Women’s Challenge
-
Chief Operations Officer of the Two Oceans Marathon NPC
-
Operations Lead for the Cape Town Marathon
-
General Manager of Western Province Athletics
She has also contributed to international competitions such as the Confederation of African Athletics Cross Country Championships.
Known for her runner-focused approach and collaborative leadership style, Forge has consistently delivered safe, high-quality events while strengthening ties with sponsors, federations, and local communities.
CMA Leadership on the Appointment
CMA Chairperson Mqondisi Ngcobo welcomed Forge’s appointment, saying:
“As we approach our centenary, appointing a dedicated Race Director ensures that Comrades remains at the forefront of global ultramarathons. Sue brings unparalleled expertise and a passion for the running community.”
General Manager Alain Dalais, to whom Forge will report, added:
“Sue brings a wealth of experience and dedication. The Comrades community will all benefit from this appointment.”
Focus on the 99th and 100th Races
Forge, who previously served on the Comrades Race Advisory Committee, will assume her duties on 1 November 2025.
She will focus on addressing operational challenges from this year’s race and ensuring the 99th Comrades and the 100th centenary edition set new standards for innovation and safety.
Forge said she is honored to take on the role:
“The Comrades Marathon is more than a race, it is a symbol of endurance, camaraderie, and South African spirit. I look forward to delivering an unforgettable experience for runners and spectators alike.”
