DA Demands Urgent Intervention Over Ramaphosa’s Unhygienic Conditions

The Gauteng provincial government’s disregard for the worsening sanitation conditions at the Ramaphosa informal settlement in Emfuleni has drawn harsh criticism from the Democratic Alliance (DA), which has warned that the current situation constitutes a flagrant violation of human rights.
Residents reported that they have been forced to use dirty, worm-infested mobile toilets for months because government funding for the sanitation program has been halted. Political outcry was sparked by a recent EWN exposé that raised awareness of the problem nationwide.
When DA officials visited the area on Tuesday, they were clearly troubled by what they saw. Mervyn Cirota, the party’s Human Settlements spokesperson, called the situation “degrading and unacceptable,” claiming that the residents are being denied basic dignity.
According to Cirota, “these conditions are not only unsanitary but inhumane.” The fact that mobile restrooms haven’t been cleaned in such a long time is absurd. This is a total disregard for the rights and well-being of the residents, not merely carelessness.
The DA maintains that disciplinary action is insufficient on its own, despite claims that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has reprimanded officials in the Department of Human Settlements. The party is demanding a long-term, dependable sanitation plan as well as immediate action.
“A consistent system must be in place. Because of the obvious governance failure that is taking place here, we will escalate this issue with Premier and MEC Tanseem Motara,” Cirota continued.
The DA has promised to keep putting pressure on the provincial government until Emfuleni’s citizens get the sanitation services they so richly deserve and sorely need.
