Lesufi Slams Daveyton Attack on Crime Prevention Wardens as ‘Utter Disregard for Law’

Early-morning ambush
In the early hours of Sunday morning, violence once again gripped Daveyton when five Gauteng crime prevention wardens were gunned down while on duty near the local railway station. Armed with high-calibre weapons, including AK-47s and pistols, a group of around twelve suspects opened fire during a routine patrol.
Two female and three male wardens were struck in the hail of bullets. All five survived and are currently receiving treatment in hospital, but the incident has shaken both law enforcement and the community they serve.
Lesufi’s strong condemnation
Premier Panyaza Lesufi wasted no time in condemning the attack, calling it a “senseless act” that reflects an “utter disregard for the rule of law.”
“These wardens, along with our police officers, put their lives on the line every day to keep communities safe. To target them in this way is unacceptable, and we will not be deterred,” Lesufi said in a statement.
The Gauteng government confirmed that the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Daveyton has opened a case of attempted murder. A full-scale manhunt is now underway to track down the suspects.
Community shaken, but wardens praised
Locally known as Amapanyaza, the crime prevention wardens were formally recognised as peace officers last year, with authority equal to that of traffic officers. Their role has been central to Gauteng’s fight against crime hotspots, particularly around transport hubs like railway stations.
Lesufi commended the wardens for their bravery and said he would personally visit them at Daveyton Main Clinic to extend the provincial government’s support. “I wish them a speedy recovery and stand with their families during this difficult time,” he added.
Bigger questions about safety
The attack has reignited debates around the risks crime prevention wardens face on duty. Armed gangs, often better equipped than the wardens themselves, have become bolder in targeting both commuters and security officials in Gauteng.
On social media, outrage quickly spread, with residents questioning how criminals continue to operate so brazenly in public spaces. “If even wardens with badges and authority aren’t safe, what chance do ordinary citizens have?” one user wrote.
Manhunt continues
Police have not yet confirmed any arrests, but SAPS says every effort is being made to identify and apprehend the group of suspects. For the injured wardens and their families, the focus now is on recovery. For Gauteng at large, the shooting serves as a stark reminder of the escalating battle between law enforcement and heavily armed criminals.
