Police arrest six suspects in Delft and Mfuleni extortion ring bust

Police have dismantled an alleged extortion syndicate operating in Delft and Mfuleni, arresting six men and seizing a large cache of illegal firearms and drugs.

The arrests, made around 5am on Thursday, involved the Anti-Economic Crime Task Team, the Provincial Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Policing Team, and Crime Intelligence. Authorities acted on intelligence that the group was terrorising residents for extortion payments.

Six males, aged 22 to 31, were charged with possession of prohibited and unlicensed firearms, ammunition, and drugs. The seized arsenal included an AK-47, multiple pistols, one R1 round, and 400 mandrax tablets.

Five of the suspects are also wanted in connection with a double murder case in Stellenbosch. They are set to appear in the Blue Downs and Bellville Magistrate’s Courts. Confiscated firearms will undergo ballistic analysis.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile commended the joint teams for their work in the operation.
