Detroit synagogue truck attack leaves suspect dead after security guards intervene
A quiet Thursday morning outside Detroit quickly turned into a tense security emergency after a man drove a pickup truck into a synagogue building, sparking a fire and forcing a large police and emergency response.
The incident unfolded at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, one of the largest Reform Jewish congregations in the United States. Authorities confirmed that the 41-year-old suspect died after security guards confronted him during the attack.
While no worshippers or children inside the building were injured, the dramatic scene sent shockwaves through the local community and beyond.
Truck crashes through synagogue entrance
According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, the man drove his truck directly into the synagogue building before continuing down an interior hallway.
Security guards responded immediately. During the confrontation, they opened fire on the suspect after he forced his way inside.
Investigators have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the suspect’s death. Officials say the engagement between security personnel and the attacker is still part of the ongoing investigation.
The impact and resulting fire caused significant smoke inside the building. As emergency crews evacuated the premises, around 30 law enforcement officers were later treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation.
One security guard was also injured when the truck struck the building.
Images from the scene showed smoke rising from the synagogue as firefighters worked to contain the blaze and clear the building.
Suspect identified by authorities
The Department of Homeland Security identified the suspect as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali.
Officials say Ghazali was born in Lebanon and moved to Detroit in 2011 after receiving a visa granted to spouses of United States citizens. He later became a naturalised US citizen in 2016.
Law enforcement confirmed that he appeared to be acting alone. Police dogs were deployed to inspect the vehicle and the surrounding area to rule out the presence of explosives.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has opened a probe into the incident, describing it as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.
Authorities have not yet released an official motive.
Personal tragedy may have preceded the attack
Several media reports in the United States suggest that Ghazali had recently experienced a devastating personal loss.
A neighbour told local journalists that members of his family had recently been killed in an Israeli strike in Lebanon. A source within Michigan’s Lebanese American community also said the attack had reportedly occurred roughly ten days earlier.
Officials have not confirmed whether this event played any role in the synagogue attack.
Investigators say determining the suspect’s motive will be a key part of the FBI’s ongoing inquiry.
Security fears rise amid global tensions
The attack happened at a time of heightened security across the United States.
Authorities have increased vigilance after the escalation of conflict in the Middle East involving Israel, Iran, and regional actors. Officials say tensions from overseas conflicts can sometimes raise concerns about safety at religious institutions.
Oakland County Sheriff Bouchard said local law enforcement had already been preparing for potential incidents.
For the past two weeks, police had been discussing the possibility of threats against places of worship and community centres linked to global tensions.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the incident, calling it heartbreaking and emphasising that Jewish residents should be able to practise their faith safely.
Across the US, the attack reignited conversations about the protection of religious spaces. Synagogues, mosques, churches, and other places of worship have increasingly strengthened security measures in recent years.
A community shaken but unharmed
Despite the frightening nature of the incident, authorities confirmed that no synagogue staff members or children were harmed.
Temple Israel remains a central hub for Jewish life in the Detroit area, hosting religious services, educational programmes, and community events.
For many residents, the fact that no congregants were injured was a relief amid an otherwise disturbing episode.
As the investigation continues, officials say their priority remains ensuring safety while understanding exactly what led to the violent crash that briefly turned a place of worship into the centre of a national security investigation.
