DJ Sumbody Murder Accused Linked to Two More Killings

Murder charges mount as suspects tied to new hits, including another DJ gunned down in Soweto
The four men accused of orchestrating the 2022 murder of amapiano star DJ Sumbody are now linked to two more brutal killings, deepening a web of violence that stretches across Gauteng.
Among them is controversial businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe, believed to have ordered the hit on the artist, real name Oupa John Sefoka. He appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court this week alongside his three co-accused: former police detective Michael Pule Tau, Musa Kekana, and Tiego Floyd Mabusela.
What began as a high-profile murder case is now evolving into something far more complex and sinister.
Same suspects, more bodies
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the men now face fresh charges in connection with two other murders:
-
Hector “DJ Vintos” Buthelezi, who was gunned down outside a nightclub in Orlando East, Soweto, in March 2022.
-
Don Tindleni, shot on the N1 highway in Johannesburg in March 2023.
Both killings were previously unsolved. Now, ballistics tests have linked the three pistols and one AK-47 seized during the suspects’ April 2024 arrests to both scenes.
While Molefe is not yet charged in the Tindleni case, police say the three alleged hitmen are directly connected, and the investigation into the mastermind is ongoing.
DJ Sumbody’s murder: A turning point
In November 2022, DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza, were shot dead in a drive-by attack in Woodmead. The shooting sparked nationwide outrage and calls for action on violent crime in the entertainment industry.
Molefe is believed to have coordinated the hit, while his three associates allegedly carried it out.
Their arrest earlier this year also unearthed ties to the April 2024 murder of engineer Armand Swart in Vereeniging. Swart was shot 23 times outside his workplace. That case is now before the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.
One trial to unite them all?
Mathe confirmed that the state is seeking to consolidate all related cases, DJ Sumbody, DJ Vintos, Don Tindleni, and Armand Swart, into one trial due to the overlapping suspects, weapons, and charges.
“The goal is for all of these to be centralised. It’s the same suspects, the same kinds of charges,” she said.
Police are also investigating possible links to other high-profile cases, including the attempted murder of actress and influencer Tebogo Thobejane. Only two of the suspects, Mabusela and Kekana, are connected to that case, and the firearm used has not yet been recovered.
No bail for now
Molefe’s bail application has been postponed to 6 August 2025. His co-accused have chosen not to apply for bail.
As public interest in the case grows, Mathe urged patience, confirming that investigators are still piecing together the full story. “We are not yet ready to disclose motive,” she said. “That will be revealed in court.”
A growing storm of violence
This is no longer just a celebrity murder. It is now a sprawling, multi-case criminal investigation involving ex-cops, alleged hitmen, and underworld figures operating across Gauteng.
If the state succeeds in uniting these cases into one trial, it may become one of the most closely watched criminal proceedings in recent South African memory.
