Controversial SAPS Leader Steps Into the Spotlight

Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo, head of SAPS Crime Intelligence and former leader of the now-disbanded Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), is expected to take the stand at the Madlanga Commission on Monday. His testimony marks day eight of the commission and promises to be one of the most closely watched developments in the inquiry.

Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga confirmed Khumalo’s appearance, noting that coordination with the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court has ensured there would be no scheduling conflicts. Khumalo, arrested in June at OR Tambo International Airport alongside six senior police officials, faces charges linked to fraud, corruption, and the alleged misuse of intelligence funds.

Arrest Sparks Questions About Intelligence Operations

Khumalo’s detention sent shockwaves through South Africa’s law enforcement community. KZN Police Commissioner Lt-Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who has already testified at the commission, suggested the arrest was strategically aimed at halting investigations into powerful drug cartels and organised crime networks.

“When General Khumalo was arrested, it became clear, this wasn’t just a legal matter. It was a strategic hit on our operations,” Mkhwanazi told the commission.

Whistleblowers from the Independent Directorate for Anti-Corruption (IDAC) reportedly provided a letter that triggered the arrests. According to Mkhwanazi, the letter wasn’t formally requested, but its existenceand signature, was used to seize the investigation’s momentum.

Exposing the Inner Workings of the PKTT

Khumalo’s testimony is expected to shed light on the PKTT’s operations, a unit designed to probe politically motivated killings. Critics have long questioned whether corruption and political interference undermined the task team’s mission.

Observers on social media have already speculated that Khumalo’s insights could expose deep-seated issues within the broader security cluster, including alleged corruption and mismanagement in SAPS intelligence units. Many are calling the commission a pivotal moment for transparency and accountability in law enforcement.

The Stakes Are High

As the Madlanga Commission continues, Khumalo’s appearance may provide clarity on allegations that SAPS leadership misused its mandate to disrupt investigations rather than pursue justice. Analysts suggest that what emerges from his testimony could have far-reaching consequences, not just for Khumalo and his colleagues, but for public trust in South Africa’s police and judicial institutions.

The commission has signaled that more witnesses are expected to come forward, promising additional revelations on corruption within both SAPS and the judiciary. For now, all eyes remain on Monday’s session as Khumalo prepares to face some of the toughest questions of his career.
