A small business community in Dunoon is reeling after the tragic death of tavern owner Zolile Dlakana. The 35-year-old was kidnapped from his home in the early hours of Sunday, August 9, and was later found dead under grim circumstances.

Kidnapped from home

Dlakana’s family revealed the unsettling details of his disappearance on social media. He was last seen wearing all black clothes and black-and-orange Tekkies from Bathu around 00:45. No ransom demand was ever made, leaving friends and family anxious and confused.

SAPS confirmed the discovery of his body in a pool of water in Gushindoda, Delft. Sergeant Wesley Twigg said the victim showed multiple injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. A murder case has been registered, but police have not made any arrests.

Social media panic and misinformation

The case has also highlighted the dangers of misinformation online. Earlier this month, posts falsely claimed that KwaZulu-Natal businessman Jerry Boshoga, who was kidnapped in November 2024, had been found dead. Brigadier Athlenda Mathe urged the public to verify facts before sharing, stressing that Boshoga’s case remains sensitive.

“Social media users must spare a thought for the families and avoid spreading unverified information,” Mathe said.

Community impact

Dlakana was a respected member of the Dunoon community, known for running his local tavern and supporting neighbourhood events. Local residents expressed shock and grief on social media, describing him as “a kind soul” whose death has shaken the small-town atmosphere.

Crime analysts note that kidnappings targeting business owners have been on the rise in parts of the Western Cape, with perpetrators often seeking ransom or exerting pressure on local enterprises.

Ongoing investigation

Authorities are continuing their investigation into Dlakana’s murder. Police have appealed for anyone with information about his abduction or the identities of the perpetrators to come forward.

As the community mourns, the case serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance, responsible social media sharing, and swift police response in curbing violent crime in South African townships.
