Tragedy in Westville: Woman Shot Dead in Domestic Dispute at Popular Durban Pub

What should have been an ordinary Monday afternoon at one of Westville’s busiest pubs ended in tragedy. A 48-year-old woman was shot and killed inside Waxy O’Connors, a well-known pub and restaurant in the Durban suburb, in what police suspect was a domestic dispute.
The incident has left locals shaken, reopening deep concerns about rising cases of domestic violence spilling into public spaces.
Shots Fired at Lunchtime
According to private security company dRK Tactical, their officers rushed to the restaurant after reports of gunfire just after 1:30pm on Jan Hofmeyer Road. On arrival, they found panicked patrons fleeing the venue. Inside, they discovered the woman lying on the floor with fatal gunshot wounds.
The alleged shooter, a 63-year-old man identified as the victim’s husband, was still at the scene. He surrendered without resistance and was restrained by security officers until police arrived.
Colonel Robert Netshiunda, spokesperson for KZN police, confirmed that the man was arrested and will face murder charges. “It is reported that the couple was having drinks when an argument erupted, and the suspect shot the victim, who was declared dead at the scene,” he said.
A Scene of Shock and Grief
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson described the scene as harrowing. “Medics were shown into the pub where a female believed to be in her late forties was found unresponsive with gunshot wounds. Despite immediate assessment, she showed no signs of life and was declared deceased.”
Staff at Waxy O’Connors issued a statement expressing their devastation, saying the establishment is cooperating fully with police investigations. For a venue known more for live music, cold beers, and Sunday family lunches, the shooting has left both employees and patrons reeling.
Domestic Violence in the Spotlight
While the exact motive remains under investigation, police have not ruled out domestic violence. Sadly, this is not an isolated story in South Africa, where incidents of gender-based violence remain alarmingly high.
Social media reaction to the news has been swift. Many Durban residents expressed anger and heartbreak online, questioning how such violence could erupt in broad daylight in a public space. Others called for stricter gun control laws and more robust interventions to curb domestic violence before it turns deadly.
A Community in Mourning
For Westville, a suburb that prides itself on being family-friendly and relatively safe compared to some other parts of Durban, this shooting has shaken community trust. Parents, residents, and regulars at Waxy O’Connors say they feel both grief for the victim and unease that such violence reached their local gathering place.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court this week. As the investigation continues, locals are left grappling with the tragedy, once again reminded that domestic disputes can escalate with devastating consequences, sometimes in the most public of spaces.
