Panado, R35k, and a Police Scandal: Edenvale Raid Ends with 10 Officers in Handcuffs

What started as a cigarette raid has turned into a courtroom drama involving headache pills, missing cash, and a full-blown corruption case
In a scandal that has left Gauteng residents shaking their heads, ten police officers from the SAPS and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department have been arrested, not by criminals, but by their own colleagues.
The arrests, carried out while the officers were still on duty, stem from a June raid in Edenvale, where officers reportedly walked away with more than they should have. Among the seized items: illicit cigarettes, R35,000 in cash, and three boxes of Panado headache tablets worth R5,000. But not everything made it back to the station.
According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), the incident is part of a wider crackdown initiated by the Gauteng Premier’s office. The accused officers now face charges of theft and corruption and are due to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
A raid gone wrong
The operation took place at a shop on Hermila Avenue in Edenvale, where officers allegedly arrested a cashier for trading illicit cigarettes and another employee for immigration violations. But things quickly turned murky.
IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping confirmed that while the officers seized cash, cigarettes, and medication during the bust, the evidence logged at the police station didn’t match the actual haul. It was the shop manager who raised the red flag, disputing the amount and type of goods the officers officially recorded.
“R35,000 and Panado don’t just vanish”
The missing R35,000 and Panado have become symbols of something larger. For everyday South Africans, it’s not just about the stolen goods. It’s about the erosion of trust in the very people meant to uphold the law.
Many on social media have commented with disbelief, using hashtags like #PanadoPolitics and #EdenvaleHeist to vent. “Only in SA do you hear about cops stealing painkillers and thinking they’ll get away with it,” one post read. Another said, “Imagine going to jail over Panado. You’re not even safe from headaches anymore.”
Who’s involved?
Among the ten arrested officers, one holds the rank of sergeant, while the rest are constables, according to IPID. The incident has prompted fresh scrutiny into the oversight of law enforcement, especially in community raids and informal economy operations.
The officers’ court appearance could shed light on whether this was a rogue decision or part of a pattern. Either way, the pressure is now on the justice system to deliver answers and consequences.
Bigger questions remain
While the court will determine guilt or innocence, the broader issue of police accountability is back in the spotlight. Community members and rights organisations continue to call for stronger oversight of raids and handling of evidence, especially in economically vulnerable areas like Edenvale, where shop raids are not uncommon.
For now, though, the community watches and waits. And as the country shakes off yet another case of police misconduct, one thing is clear: trust, once lost, is hard to recover.
