Taxi Tensions Leave Commuters Stranded

Commuters in Ekurhuleni faced uncertainty on Friday as minibus taxi operations stalled amid disputes over impounded vehicles, particularly ten-seater taxis. While Gauteng’s Santaco branch assured the public that operations elsewhere in the province would continue, the situation in Ekurhuleni remained unresolved.

One commuter expressed anxiety over the disruption. “The taxi association is not allowing operations this side, and we’re just sitting waiting on our transport to tell us if he’s taking the risk. I am panicking,” she said.

Why Operations Are Halted

Santaco officials argue that drivers are being unfairly targeted for not having licences that the government no longer issues. Each vehicle impoundment can cost taxi owners fines of up to R5 000, crippling businesses and livelihoods.

Services in Ekurhuleni were temporarily halted on Thursday, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded. “We regret the inconvenience caused to commuters and the anxiety created among the public,” said Graham Fritz, Santaco Gauteng Secretary.

Talks Underway

Fritz confirmed that discussions about Ekurhuleni taxi operations are ongoing. “The provincial and national leadership of the council is engaged in constructive dialogue to resolve the outstanding matters,” he said. He added that Santaco is in contact with the Gauteng Provincial Government and the National Transport Ministry to find a “speedy and amicable” solution.

Finding a Sustainable Solution

Santaco aims to resolve the impoundment issue through negotiation rather than province-wide protests. “We sincerely apologise to commuters and reaffirm our dedication to ensuring smooth and reliable transport,” Fritz said. An update on Ekurhuleni taxi services will be communicated once a decision is reached.

For now, commuters are advised to monitor announcements closely as the standoff between taxi operators and authorities continues.
