Air travel between South Africa and Dubai has hit an unexpected pause after Emirates announced a temporary suspension of flights to and from the United Arab Emirates’ busiest airport.

The move comes as tensions continue to escalate in the broader US-Israel conflict involving Iran, with security concerns prompting aviation authorities to act cautiously around major transport hubs in the region.

For many South African travellers who rely on Dubai as a gateway to Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, the sudden halt has created uncertainty around flight schedules and travel plans.

What happened at Dubai International Airport

The disruption follows a drone-related incident reported near Dubai International Airport. According to officials, the impact occurred close to one of the airport’s fuel tanks and resulted in a fire.

Emergency crews from Dubai Civil Defence responded quickly and managed to contain the blaze. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported.

Even though the situation was brought under control, aviation officials opted to temporarily suspend flights at the airport as a precaution while safety assessments were carried out.

Some aircraft already in the air were diverted to Al Maktoum International Airport, while others began returning to their countries of departure.

South African flights that may be affected

Several Emirates routes between South Africa and Dubai have been impacted or remain uncertain as the situation continues to develop.

Flights to Johannesburg

As of Monday morning, around 10:30 am, flights EK761 and EK763 from Dubai to Johannesburg showed no available details on flight-tracking systems. This usually indicates that the flights are likely suspended.

Two later departures from Dubai, EK765 and EK767, are still listed as scheduled for the afternoon and evening. However, airlines have warned that schedules may change quickly depending on developments.

Flights departing Johannesburg

Flights EK768 and EK766 leaving Johannesburg for Dubai remain listed as scheduled.

However, flight EK764, which is due to depart Johannesburg later in the evening, currently shows no information. This suggests it may be suspended.

Flights to and from Cape Town

Flight EK770 from Dubai to Cape Town is still listed as scheduled at this stage.

Tuesday’s EK772 service to Cape Town currently has no available flight details, which suggests it may not operate.

The return flight EK771 from Cape Town to Dubai, scheduled for Monday evening, has been cancelled.

Durban flights

Durban travellers may also face disruption. Flight EK776 from Durban to Dubai does not currently show flight information for Monday evening, indicating that it is likely suspended.

Why Dubai matters so much for South African travellers

Dubai is one of the busiest international transit hubs for South Africans heading overseas. Emirates operates multiple daily flights from Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, connecting passengers to hundreds of destinations across Europe, Asia, and North America.

Because of that role, even short disruptions at Dubai International Airport can ripple through global travel schedules very quickly.

Travel experts often point out that Dubai’s position between continents makes it one of the most important stopover points in the world.

Travellers urged to check flight updates

Authorities and airlines are advising passengers not to travel to the airport unless they have confirmed information about their flight.

Travellers are encouraged to contact their airline directly or monitor official updates before leaving for the airport.

Airport officials say further updates will be released through official channels once the situation becomes clearer.

For now, the incident serves as another reminder of how quickly global events can affect international travel routes, especially when major aviation hubs are involved.
