Over 50 Estcourt Learners Hospitalised After Eating Allegedly Expired Food

More than 50 learners from Bambe Primary School in Estcourt were rushed to hospital after allegedly eating expired SuperCool ice lollies sold by a school vendor.

Learners fall ill after break-time

The incident occurred on September 16, when several children complained of stomach pains shortly after returning to class. Teachers quickly intervened, taking the learners to Ntabamhlophe Clinic before they were transferred to Estcourt Provincial Hospital for further treatment.

Vendor questioned, samples tested

Police have taken the vendor in for questioning, and samples of the food have been sent for testing to confirm whether the products were expired.

Local government response

Inkosi Langalibalele Mayor Mduduzi Myeza visited the school to provide food and support for affected learners, parents, and teachers.

“I have sent the speaker of council, Cllr SW Khumalo, and Ward Cllr MT Mvelase to monitor the situation and support the teachers, parents and children during this time. What we can confirm is that the police have taken the seller in for questioning and that the ice blocks have been sent as samples for further testing,” said Myeza.

He also urged parents to stay alert.
“If a child is complaining of stomach pains, do not try to calm them down – take them to the nearest clinic immediately,” he advised.
