Routine N12 Roadblock Near Stilfontein Uncovers Major Explosives Haul
A routine stop that changed everything
What began as an ordinary roadblock on the N12 between Stilfontein and Klerksdorp quickly turned into one of the more alarming policing discoveries in the North West this festive season.
Officers from the South African Police Service were conducting routine checks near Stilfontein when they stopped a vehicle travelling along the busy N12 route. A search of the vehicle revealed six bags concealed inside, each packed with explosives and related equipment.
The stretch of road linking Klerksdorp to Stilfontein is a well-used corridor, particularly in December when holiday traffic picks up. That context alone has left many locals shaken by how close this discovery came to everyday motorists.
Inside the explosives haul
Police spokesperson Constable Thuto Bobelo confirmed that the bags contained an estimated 150 shock tube detonator assemblies, close to 40 electric shock tube initiators, and five blasting cartridges. These are not items that belong on a public highway.
A bomb technician was immediately called to the scene to safely secure and seal the explosives, ensuring there was no risk to officers or passing traffic. The careful handling of the situation prevented what police say could have turned into a devastating incident.
Arrests made under long-standing explosives law
Three men aged between 41 and 48 were arrested on the spot and charged with possession of explosives under the Explosives Act. The suspects are expected to appear at the Stilfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday, December 15.
While investigations continue into where the explosives were headed and for what purpose, the arrests alone have reassured many residents that the situation was intercepted before anything worse could unfold.
Operation Shanela and festive season vigilance
The discovery forms part of Operation Shanela, a nationwide policing drive focused on visibility, roadblocks, and crime prevention during high-risk periods.
Acting Provincial Commissioner Ryno Naidoo praised the officers involved, saying proactive policing is critical during the holiday season when roads are busier and communities are more vulnerable.
On social media, many South Africans have echoed that sentiment, applauding police vigilance while also expressing concern about how frequently explosives are linked to illegal mining and organised crime across parts of the province.
Why this stop matters
Beyond the headlines, this incident is a stark reminder of how much depends on routine policing done well. A single roadblock, often seen as an inconvenience by drivers, may have prevented serious harm during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
As police ramp up visibility ahead of Christmas, authorities say motorists can expect continued roadblocks and stop-and-search operations. For many in the North West, this latest bust has reinforced why those checks still matter.
