Floyd Shivambu Accuses MK Party of Looting, Sparks Leadership Fallout

Floyd Shivambu Breaks Silence on MK Party Financial Mismanagement & Internal Conflict
On 19 June 2025, former MK Party secretary‑general Floyd Shivambu addressed the press, claiming he was displaced due to a “fake intelligence report” accusing him of plotting to “dethrone” party leader Jacob Zuma. He also highlighted an unauthorized trip to Malawi to meet fugitive pastor Shepherd Bushiri, which party structures deemed a breach of its constitution.
Redeployment & Official Backlash
Shivambu was officially removed on 3 June 2025 and redeployed to Parliament as an MKP MP. However, the party’s national spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, confirmed the June 19 media briefing was not sanctioned by the MK Party.
The ‘Fake Intelligence Report’ Claim
Shivambu explained the intelligence dossier falsely accused him of mobilizing funds to overthrow Zuma – a claim he strongly refutes, labelling it “bizarre and fake.”
Zuma’s Warning & Party Discipline
In response, Zuma emphasised that the party would not “beg” undisciplined members. He referenced the party’s rapid turnover, stating it has had seven secretaries-general, underscoring its intolerance for internal discord.
Malawi Trip & Bushiri Controversy
Shivambu’s April visit to Shepherd Bushiri’s church drew strong criticism from both justice authorities and within MK Party leadership. The trip, which the Ministry of Justice described as “blatant disrespect of South Africa’s legal system,” violated party rules and triggered his removal.
Political Realignment on the Horizon?
He confirmed discussions with traditional, civic, and religious leaders – including reported talks with Patrice Motsepe – to explore launching a new political movement. While still officially within the MK Party, Shivambu is yet to finalise his next step .
Public & Party Reaction
Social media reactions were mixed, with some applauding his courage, and others deriding his political gamble. MK insiders are reportedly vying for his vacant position, including faction members rallying behind spokesperson Ndhlela.
Shivambu’s media briefing has spotlighted internal factionalism and serious allegations of financial mismanagement within the MK Party. As the fallout continues, the party faces growing questions around leadership authority, discipline, and transparency. Whether Shivambu remains within the fold or spearheads a new political movement, his actions are reshaping South Africa’s political opposition landscape.
