FNB is stepping up convenience for its customers by offering the ability to apply for smart ID cards and passports directly through its banking app. This initiative, set to roll out in the coming months, is part of the bank’s continued collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA).

Digital Transformation in Public Services

This move is a major milestone for South Africa’s digital service delivery. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber revealed that FNB and Capitec are the first banks to sign up for a new partnership aimed at expanding the eHomeAffairs programme. This collaboration will allow more branches and banking apps to facilitate smart ID and passport applications.

“We’re marking the beginning of the end for long queues at Home Affairs,” Schreiber said. “This is the start of a new, digital-first approach to public service.”

What FNB Customers Can Expect

FNB customers will soon be able to apply for both smart ID and passport reissuance through the FNB app. Once completed, applicants can choose to have their documents delivered to their address or pick them up from a local branch.

The app will also include a tracking feature, letting you check the status of your application at any time. For first-time applicants or those who need photos and fingerprints, FNB’s designated eHomeAffairs branches will continue to offer in-person services.

Extending the Service Nationwide

FNB’s pilot programme has already issued over 570,000 documents across just seven branches since 2015. The bank plans to expand the service to all branches, making it easier for customers nationwide to access this critical service.

Zibu Nqala, CEO of FNB Points of Presence, noted that the bank’s goal is to ensure access to these services in every province, focusing on communities with historically limited access to Home Affairs resources.

Future Rollouts by Other Banks

FNB isn’t the only bank expanding its role in this programme. Capitec will launch the service at 10 branches starting in October 2025, with plans to expand to 100 branches by March 2026. Other banks, like Absa and Discovery Bank, also plan to increase their eHomeAffairs service offerings.

This marks a significant shift towards making government services more accessible and streamlined for South Africans. Whether it’s for employment, banking, or travel, having easy access to these important documents has never been more crucial.

By using FNB’s mobile app, you’ll be able to apply for your smart ID or passport with just a few taps—cutting down on time and frustration. This is more than just a service update; it’s a step forward in making essential government services as easy as opening your banking app.
