The community of Umthata in Inanda woke to a scene of unspeakable horror on Sunday morning. What remained were the charred skeletons of two vehicles and, inside them, the bodies of four people, burned so severely they were beyond recognition.

The grim discovery has sent shockwaves through the area north of Durban, with police launching a major investigation into the shocking murders.

A Gruesome Discovery

According to Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a police spokesperson, the call came in about two burned vehicles. When officers arrived, the full extent of the tragedy became clear. Inside a Nissan NP200, they found one body. In a nearby Toyota Rumion, they discovered three more.

All four victims had been burned beyond any immediate hope of identification. Adding a further layer of mystery and brutality to the scene, police found the carcasses of three cattle next to the NP200 bakkie.

The Stock Theft Angle

At this early stage, police are working to unravel the motive behind the killings. Colonel Netshiunda stated that the motive is still unknown but confirmed that investigators suspect the incident “could be related to stock theft.”

The presence of the dead cattle strongly suggests a link to the rampant and often violent issue of livestock theft in the region, where such crimes can escalate into extreme retaliation. The process of formally identifying the victims is now underway, a painstaking task given the condition of the remains, as police continue their search for the perpetrators.

A Context of Brutal Violence

Tragically, this incident is not an isolated case of extreme violence in KZN. Earlier this month, in a separate but equally heinous case, a 48-year-old man was arrested in the Ngome area after a brutal attack on his own family.

The man allegedly burned his 41-year-old girlfriend to death, attacked her 28-year-old daughter with an axe, and then dragged her 13-year-old daughter into nearby bushes where he raped her. He has been charged with murder, attempted murder, and rape.

These back-to-back tragedies paint a devastating picture of the levels of violence confronting communities in KwaZulu-Natal. The investigation in Inanda continues, but for the families of the four victims, the search for answers has only just begun amidst unimaginable loss.
