The Gauteng Health Department is once again under the microscope after its Head of Department, Lesiba Malotana, was suspended for failing a lifestyle audit. The revelation, confirmed by the Gauteng government, has ignited fresh debate around corruption and accountability in one of the province’s most crucial sectors.

A “High Risk” Red Flag

The suspension follows a report by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), which rated Malotana as “high risk” after discrepancies were found between his declared income and apparent lifestyle. According to Acting Premier Faith Mazibuko, who addressed the Gauteng Legislature on Tuesday, the audit had been completed in August last year, but further information from Malotana was requested before final conclusions were drawn.

Despite his cooperation, the SIU’s final report recommended a full forensic investigation into the HOD’s finances, suggesting deeper scrutiny was necessary. The classification of “high risk” typically signals that there are significant inconsistencies that warrant further probe.

Political and Public Reaction

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has been quick to call for stronger action. DA Health Spokesperson Jack Bloom said criminal charges should be pursued if any wrongdoing is uncovered, adding that the public deserves full transparency from leaders responsible for managing billions in public healthcare funds.

On social media, reactions have been sharp and divided. Many users praised the government for acting decisively, while others expressed frustration over what they view as a recurring pattern of suspensions and investigations without tangible consequences. “Another audit, another suspension but where are the convictions?” one X user asked, reflecting widespread skepticism.

Not Linked to Tembisa Hospital Scandal

While rumours initially tied Malotana’s suspension to the R2 billion Tembisa Hospital looting scandal, Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko clarified that he was not implicated in that particular investigation. Still, the timing of the audit findings has reignited public concern about mismanagement within Gauteng’s health system a department that has faced repeated controversies over tender processes and financial oversight.

A Broader Push for Accountability

The lifestyle audit forms part of a broader partnership between the Gauteng Provincial Government and the SIU, aimed at tightening ethical compliance among senior officials. The initiative, launched under Premier Panyaza Lesufi, reflects growing pressure to clean up governance and restore faith in public institutions.

As the investigation unfolds, Malotana’s case may become a litmus test for whether Gauteng’s anti-corruption measures are delivering real results or merely producing headlines.
