These Gauteng areas should brace for scheduled load shedding this week

As electricity demand continues to challenge South Africa’s power grid, Eskom has announced scheduled load-shedding for multiple areas across Gauteng this week. Residents and businesses are being urged to prepare for planned outages, which could last anywhere from four to five hours depending on the location.

Morning interruptions: early wake-up call

Areas facing load reduction in the mornings, between 5am and 9am, include parts of Soweto such as Naledi, Jabulani, Diepkloof, Orlando East, as well as Vereeniging, Sharpeville, Vosloorus extensions, Orange Farm, and Stretford extensions. Other morning-affected zones are Ivory Park extensions, Rabie Ridge, Meadowlands, Zola, Soweto Nomzamo, and Khutsong.

Residents in these regions are advised to plan for possible disruptions to morning routines, including water heating, breakfast preparations, and commuting arrangements, especially for those working from home or early-shift workers.

Evening load reductions: winding down in the dark

Evening outages are scheduled from 5pm to 10pm, impacting Klipspruit, Vryburg, Rethabiseng, Khutsong, Tsakane, Protea North, and surrounding areas. Additional areas experiencing evening load reduction include Orange Farm extensions, Emdeni, Protea South, Mabopane, Sebokeng, Dobsonville, and Magagula Heights.

With evening cuts coinciding with peak domestic electricity use, residents may experience challenges with cooking, heating, and entertainment, highlighting the ongoing strain on Gauteng households.

Other affected areas to watch

Beyond the major zones, Eskom’s schedule lists additional areas that should prepare for interruptions this week, including Riverside, Dhlamini, Cuba, Zonkizizwe, Chiawelo, Beverley Hills-East, Elandsfontein AH, Kudube, Moroka, Winterveldt, and Cosmo City.

Public reaction and planning

Social media has already seen residents sharing tips and venting frustrations, from recommending battery backups to lamenting spoiled food in fridges during past outages. Businesses are also on alert, with small enterprises particularly vulnerable to disrupted trading hours.

Local community leaders have reminded residents to stay informed via Eskom’s official platforms and to use electricity sparingly during peak hours to help minimise the impact.

Eskom’s seven-day rotation schedule is aimed at distributing load reductions evenly across regions, but the persistence of power cuts continues to spark concern about infrastructure reliability and energy security in Gauteng. Planning ahead, especially for households dependent on electricity for work or study, is key to navigating the week without major disruption.

Residents are encouraged to charge devices, store water, and coordinate with neighbours and employers to ensure essential needs are met while Eskom undertakes its load-shedding plan.

In the midst of rolling outages, one message is clear: preparation is power.
