Bloodshed in Gauteng: Two pupils fatally stabbed in separate incidents

Gauteng is reeling after two tragic stabbing incidents claimed the lives of students in Johannesburg and Ennerdale, leaving families, school communities, and authorities in shock. The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has confirmed that psycho-social support services have been mobilised to assist those affected by the trauma.

A deadly Friday in Forest High School’s neighbourhood

The first incident occurred on Friday, 20 March, when a 17-year-old Grade 8 pupil from Forest High School was attacked at Rotunda Park, close to the school premises. Witnesses say the pupil was severely beaten and stabbed after classes ended. Despite being rushed to a hospital and later transferred to another medical facility, the young student succumbed to injuries, leaving classmates and teachers grappling with disbelief and grief.

Daleview tragedy follows on Monday

Just days later, tragedy struck again. On Monday, 23 March, a Grade 12 pupil from Daleview Secondary School was fatally stabbed while walking home through an open veld near a local store. Authorities are yet to clarify the motive or circumstances surrounding the attack. Police investigations into both cases are ongoing.

Support for grieving school communities

The GDE has emphasised that psychosocial support teams are working closely with schools to provide counselling and trauma assistance to students, staff, and families. MEC for Education Matome Chiloane expressed deep sorrow over the losses, describing the incidents as “devastating” for the education community.

“These tragedies are a painful reminder that violence against learners, whether inside or outside school grounds, is unacceptable,” Chiloane said. He urged communities to actively safeguard children and cooperate with law enforcement to ensure justice is served.

A call for community vigilance

Social media users have expressed outrage over the spate of school-related violence, with local parent groups urging increased patrols near schools and safer pathways for learners. Advocates for youth safety have highlighted the urgent need for community engagement, better lighting, and visible security measures around schools to prevent future attacks.

As Gauteng mourns, the GDE reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the situation and providing ongoing support to affected school communities while police investigations continue.
