In a few weeks, the global spotlight will swing towards Johannesburg as it prepares to host one of the planet’s most powerful gatherings: the G20 Leaders’ Summit. With the eyes of the world upon them, Gauteng officials have one clear message: we are ready.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi delivered a confident briefing this week, pulling back the curtain on a comprehensive and multi-layered plan designed to ensure the late-November event is seamless, secure, and showcases the province at its best.

Guaranteeing the Glow: A Bulletproof Energy Plan

Perhaps the most critical concern for any major international event in South Africa is the electricity supply. Lesufi addressed this head-on, announcing that a “comprehensive and resilient energy plan” is now active.

The strategy goes beyond just keeping the lights on at the Sandton convention centre. It includes securing power for OR Tambo International Airport, key hotels, and major transport routes. The plan features multiple backup layers, including emergency generators, protected cables, and even high mast solar lighting to ensure “uninterrupted power supply” and prevent any embarrassing blackouts during the high-profile gathering.

A Polished and Secure Welcome

Beyond the infrastructure, a massive urban beautification campaign is in full swing. The province is tackling the often-noticed issues head-on: grass is being cut, litter is being collected, and illegal dumps are being cleared across the Johannesburg CBD.

New street furniture and bins have been installed, and key tourist destinations like the Cradle of Humankind are being spruced up to welcome the influx of international visitors. The rehabilitation of streetlights on major routes is also part of an integrated effort that combines aesthetics with enhanced public safety.

A Unified Security Front

Security is, unsurprisingly, the top priority. Lesufi assured that a “robust” and “multi-level” security strategy is in place, unifying all law enforcement agencies under a single command.

Delegates will be escorted by a combined force of SAPS, National Traffic Police, and all metropolitan police departments. The province’s ports of entry are operating at an “elevated state of readiness,” with streamlined security protocols to ensure the safe and efficient arrival of all international guests.

Ready for Anything: The Nerve Centre

Acknowledging that even the best-laid plans need a contingency, the province has established a state-of-the-art multi-agency command centre. This hub integrates all emergency services, law enforcement, and essential service providers, enabling real-time coordination and a rapid response to any potential scenariofrom medical emergencies to logistical hiccups.

As Premier Lesufi put it, the province is preparing to hand over the reins to the national government with “immense pride and confidence.” His final words, “Gauteng is ready, zwakala [come],” were a direct invitation to the world, and a promise to his residents, that this global moment will be handled with precision and pride.
