Gauteng has started a major road maintenance push in Mogale City as part of a province wide effort to repair key routes and improve travel conditions for residents and businesses. The project forms part of a broader drive to improve mobility and strengthen service delivery across all municipalities.

A route with heavy pressure

Magalies Road sits on an important mobility corridor in the West Rand. It serves daily traffic, connects communities, supports local businesses, and links tourism and freight activity. The road carries a large share of travel in the area, so its condition influences local economic movement.

The Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale Tlabela, said the province has strengthened its maintenance teams to respond faster to road failures, storm damage, lighting problems, and other service needs.

She said the goal is to restore roads at a pace residents expect. The project in Mogale City reflects a wider commitment to improve mobility and road safety across the province.

What the works include

The maintenance activation covers several urgent improvements:

  • Resurfacing and patching

  • Sinkhole rehabilitation

  • Repair of streetlights

  • Restoration of traffic signals

  • Stabilisation of slopes damaged by heavy rain

The Department says its upgraded capacity helps teams meet repair targets in every municipality, not only in Mogale City. The push supports safer travel for motorists, public transport operators, and businesses.

Road safety remains a priority

The MEC stressed that maintenance is central to the province’s road safety efforts. She said well maintained roads reduce crashes and improve safety for all road users. Fixing potholes, restoring lighting, and repairing key signals helps prevent collisions and supports smoother travel.

Residents welcome the activation

Local residents in Mogale City have been calling for stronger action on deteriorating roads. Social media users responded with relief, saying the corridor has needed attention for a long time. Many pointed to the link between damaged roads and daily travel delays.

What comes next

More maintenance activations will roll out across Gauteng in the coming weeks as part of the province’s ongoing infrastructure improvement programme. The Department says the aim is stable, safe, and reliable road conditions throughout Gauteng.
