Water Crisis Forces Gauteng Clinics to Rely on Emergency Measures

Published

on

A large Rand Water pipeline burst, causing the flow to vital healthcare facilities to be disrupted, resulting in severe water shortages at several clinics and hospitals throughout Gauteng.

Several clinics in the West Rand, including those near Mogale City, have run out of supplies entirely, according to confirmation from the Department of Health. Even the backup water tankers have run out at the Fanyana Nhlapo and Eric Ndeleni clinics, which are among the most severely affected.

The Rand West City Municipality’s Mohlakeng Clinic is currently operating without any water supply at all due to the water crisis. Johannesburg has also not been exempt. The interrupted supply is also causing problems for Discoverers Community Health Centre and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, two of Africa’s biggest hospitals.

Motalatale Modiba, a spokesman for the health department, stated that although the situation is still difficult, teams are working quickly to send water tankers to the impacted areas.

“We’re making every effort to maintain services for patients and communities,” Modiba stated. “We’re organizing alternate water supplies to keep all impacted facilities open and running.”

As public annoyance over continuous water outages grows, the pipe burst underscores growing concerns about Gauteng’s infrastructure failures. Residents have been asked to be patient with the brief setbacks, and the department has promised to keep residents informed as events progress.
