Cooler Days Ahead: What to Expect from Gauteng’s Weekend Weather

If your weekend plans involve picnics or sunny braais, you might want to keep a Plan B handy, Gauteng is in for cooler, cloudier conditions with a chance of afternoon showers.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) says the province’s major cities will see a continued drop in temperatures, with overcast skies dominating much of Saturday and Sunday. While mornings will be dry, isolated showers and thundershowers could arrive by late afternoon.
Johannesburg: From clear skies to cloudy chills
Johannesburg’s brief spell of clear weather on Thursday won’t last long. By Friday, the city will see partly cloudy skies, with temperatures ranging from 11°C to a warm 22°C. Saturday will top out at 20°C, and Sunday will be even cooler at 19°C, with minimum temperatures dipping to 8°C.
For Joburgers, that means perfect conditions for a lazy morning indoors, brisk walks around Emmarentia Dam, or a coffee catch-up at your favourite corner café, without the fear of a sudden heatwave.
Pretoria: Slightly warmer, still cloudy
Pretoria will hold onto a little more warmth, starting Friday at a pleasant 25°C with a low of 12°C. Saturday will cool to 22°C and Sunday to 21°C, with early mornings hovering around 10°C. While the capital might avoid the chilliest lows, the overcast skies will keep that “blanket weather” feel going strong.
Vereeniging: Matching the capital’s mood
Vereeniging’s forecast mirrors Pretoria’s pattern almost exactly, with maximums of 22°C on both Saturday and Sunday. The real change will be in the mornings, where minimum temperatures will drop from 12°C to a brisk 8°C by Sunday.
Mostly dry mornings, possible afternoon showers
SAWS forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela says Gauteng can expect mostly dry mornings, with the weather turning more unsettled later in the day.
“Gauteng will be partly cloudy and cool on Saturday and Sunday… isolated showers and thundershowers are possible by the afternoon,” he said.
The cool, cloudy conditions are linked to a broader system affecting the central and eastern parts of South Africa. SAWS says these regions will also see partly cloudy skies with cool to warm temperatures and isolated showers.
If you’re heading out, keep a light jacket handy and maybe pack an umbrella if you’re venturing out in the late afternoon. Mornings will be great for markets, sports, and errands, but by the time afternoon rolls around, don’t be surprised if the clouds bring a short-lived downpour.
Gauteng’s winter may not be bitterly cold, but this weekend is shaping up to be the perfect excuse to slow things down, enjoy a pot of soup, and keep the kettle busy.
