Limpopo residents and gender-based violence activists have expressed outrage after a woman was rescued from a locked room in Tzaneen, where she was allegedly assaulted by her boyfriend.

Josias Letsoalo, from Mokgolobotho village, appeared in the Nkowankowa Magistrate’s Court and was remanded in custody. The case was postponed to 6 November for further investigation and a bail application.

According to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, Letsoalo faces an attempted murder charge, with additional charges likely.

“The suspect went back to prison as he is waiting for his lawyer to come and assist him with his bail application,” Malabi-Dzhangi said.

Community Rescues Assaulted Woman

The victim, 20-year-old Desiree Letsoalo, was rescued by her sister and community members, who took her to Letaba Hospital for treatment.

Miyelani Ramojela, leader of Tzaneen Speak Out Advocacy, said the organisation is monitoring the case closely.

“We are outraged and heartbroken over the alleged relentless violence she suffered at the hands of this man,” said Ramojela.

He called on residents to stand with Desiree and continue supporting survivors of gender-based violence (GBV).

Activists Praise Community Action

GBV activist Lisa Vetten praised the Tzaneen community for acting quickly to save the woman.

“It is encouraging to see communities supporting women and making it clear that abusive behaviour is not accepted,” said Vetten.

She said the case highlights the widespread impact of domestic violence on families across South Africa.

Calls for Justice and Accountability

Brenda Madumise Pajibo, director of Wise4Afrika, condemned the violence, saying intimate partner abuse must be treated as a serious crime.

“Love should never inflict pain and harm,” said Pajibo. “Women are not possessions to be controlled through fear and abuse.”

She said this case reflects the urgent need for justice and stronger action against gender-based violence nationwide.

Police investigations are ongoing.
